DIY Facials for All Skin Types

Flip through any women’s magazine and chances are you’ll come across the latest facial mask to clear up your acne or hydrate your dry skin. But sometimes it’s better to go straight to the professionals for advice, so we’ve gathered up three aesthetician-approved DIY facials that can temporarily fix those pesky skin imperfections:

Lemon and Oatmeal Mask
This facial is ideal for those with oily skin. With lemon and a touch of honey, you can reduce the buildup of dirt and oil in your pores and brighten pigmentation as well as acne scars.

Ingredients:
½ cup uncooked rolled oats
4 tbsps lemon juice
Honey (optional)

Instructions:
Blend the first two ingredients together until you create a paste-like texture. Add in honey. Apply to skin and let settle for about 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat twice a week.

Flaxseed Mask
This facial works great for eliminating dead skin cells and hydrating dry skin after - especially after a long winter!

Ingredients:
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp ground flax seed meal

Instructions:Mix ingredients together in a bowl with a spoon. Apply the mask to skin using a facial brush. Gently massage for 30 seconds and let it sit for up to 2 minutes. Let the lactose in the yogurt dissolve dead skin cells while the honey works to hydrate your skin. The ground flaxseed meal acts as a “physical exfoliant”, which gently lifts dead skin cells.

Nutmeg and Milk Exfoliating Mask
This facial works well for healing sensitive skin, while soothing and exfoliating the skin.

Ingredients:
½ tbsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp whole milk

Instructions:
Mix nutmeg and milk into a small bowl and stir. Apply the mask to your skin (freshly washed and makeup free). Gently massage into your face in small circles, and don’t forget your décolleté! Let mask sit for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. Pat face dry using a facial sponge or clean, dry cloth. Apply moisturizer afterwards. Nutmeg has a natural antibacterial and calming properties, which heal sensitive skin, and whole milk can help naturally exfoliate and hydrate.

Skincare Tips for Your Holiday Vacation

Traveling to paradise for the holidays? Although taking off from your regular routine can help to ease stress before entering the New Year, traveling can certainly take a toll on your body - especially your skin! Keep your skin healthy and hydrated with these five skincare tips for your upcoming holiday getaway:

Pack Moisturizer. Bring a travel size tube of moisturizer in your carry on bag and apply even before hopping aboard the plane. When you travel high in the sky, the altitude changes, which can cause your skin to dry out. Beat dryness by applying moisturizer day and night before and during travel.

Avoid Makeup. You heard us right! Even if you’re one of those women who never leaves the house without makeup, we promise that this small sacrifice can do wonders for your skin! At the least, avoid foundations and powders while traveling, as these products can dry out your face. Instead, try a tinted moisturizer or just stick with a little bit of cream blush for your cheeks.

Apply Facial Oil. No matter your skin type, facial oil can combat that dry skin you suffer from when traveling. For optimal results, apply this oil every hour or so on the plane to avoid loss of moisture from the change in altitude.

Drink water. We know that drinking water is wonderful for your skin (and your overall health). But when you're traveling for the holidays, be sure to drink more than you typically would and avoid excessive amounts of alcohol. Your skin will thank you later!

Sunscreen. Going somewhere tropical? If so, be careful when being exposed to the sun, as UV rays can penetrate and damage even the deepest layers of your skin. Sunscreen is your best defense against sunburn for the holidays.

At Radiance Medspa, we know that healthy skin is the way to beautiful skin! That is why we offer personalized skincare solutions to help you fight dry, flaky skin. For all of our facial treatments, we use up-to-the-minute technology and the latest advances in skin care.

Ways to Curb Your Appetite

Do you struggle with cravings? You’re not alone! Overeating is a common problem that many of us indulge in, especially around the holiday season. The solution is to find healthy tricks that regulate your diet and keep you feeling full longer.

Feel like giving up hope on your body’s temptation for sweet cravings? Hold right there! Below are a few tips to help curb your appetite and get you back to feeling like your healthy self again:

Don’t skip breakfast. We often hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But is it actually true? Turns out that those who skip out on breakfast tend to have more body weight and insulin resistance, which makes you crave more sweets. With that being said, eating a solid breakfast can help you consume less calories later in the day and get your metabolism going.

Keep healthy snacks at hand. You’re more likely to resist binge eating if you carry around light, healthy snacks, such as almonds and vegetable sticks (even a 100 calorie pack can help). If you skip out on healthy snacks in between meals, you’re more likely to eat a larger lunch or dinner than your body needs. And you know what they say: your eyes are certainly bigger than your stomach!

Create a workout routine. Your diet might start in the kitchen, but it doesn’t stop there! Don’t forget to create a fitness routine for yourself, so that you can get food off your mind and lessen your appetite - even if that means just going for a brief jog or taking the stairs to work or at the mall.

Pack on the protein. Lean proteins, such as chicken breast and fish are beneficial foods that contain lots of minerals and vitamins that your body can use resourcefully. But when you skip on protein and jump on sugary drinks and refined carbs, you crave even more of it.

We hope that these tips help you keep control of your food cravings. But let’s face it, sometimes it’s more easier said than done. That is why we offer personalized medical weight loss programs to help you lose 10 to 50 pounds and keep it off! To learn more about this body treatment, click here.

Most Common Skin Problems in Winter

Skin not feeling its best? Winter is usually that time of year when your skin is most vulnerable and needs a little extra attention. Between redness and flaking, below are four common issues that can leave your skin feeling at its worst and what you can do about it:

Red nose - With all the dry air you’re exposed to during the winter months, you may find yourself blowing your nose more often. As a result, your nose might experience some unsightly redness. The cure? A little hydrating cream should do the trick, especially if your skin is cracking.

Rough hands - When the weather is cold, the skin on your hands doesn’t have as many oil glands, which means your body finds it more difficult to defend against cold, dry air. Before heading outside or into bed, apply a glycerin-based hand cream and slip on some gloves to hold in the moisture - after some time, your hands will feel soft and hydrated once again.

Scaly legs - Like your hands, your legs also don’t have as many oil glands during the winter. What that means is your legs get rough more quickly. The trick? Take a hot shower and let the warm water hydrate your skin. Once you hop out of the shower, apply multiple layers of your favorite healing lotion.

Itchy skin - If you already suffer from eczema, chances are your condition can exacerbate. But even if you don’t deal with dry skin conditions regularly, you can bet that the heat in your home and the dry air outside will steal your natural oils and leave you with flaky, itching skin. Petrolium jelly is an effective remedy that can treat dry skin with just a few ingredients.

Want to rejuvenate your dry, itchy skin this winter? At Radiance Medspa, we can help you get rid of pesky redness and flaking skin, using treatments like Chemical Peels - designed to correct the skin’s pigmentation.

Questions to Ask Before Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Can’t stand shaving your legs every day? We don't blame you! Whether you have a stubborn patch of hair you’d rather do without or you’re tired of spending money replacing your dull razor blade, permanent laser hair removal treatment might be a great option for you!

If you have an appointment lined up or you're deciding whether or not you should go for it, you might have a few questions on your mind about the process. Don’t fret - we’ve got your answers below!

How does it work?
Most permanent laser hair removal treatments involve the use of an intense pulsed light (IPL) to get rid of the cells responsible for growing those unwanted, new hairs. This IPL spreads light over a wide area of the skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result! However, ask your trained technician how they approach the treatment.

How do I prep?

Knowing the proper steps to prep your skin is important for best results. For example, your technician might tell you to have the hair shaved on the desired area of removal, or to make sure your skin is also clean for optimal results. If you have hard-to-reach areas, don’t worry - a technician can always help you.

How many treatments do I need?
Each individual’s needs are unique, which means the number of treatments you will need can vary. However, the average person will need about 4 to 6 treatments. With that being said, ask when it’s a good time to start treatment and when you should expect to complete the process.

Is there any downtime required?
Typically, there is no recovery time needed after permanent laser hair removal. However, it’s crucial to understand your unique situation and if there are steps you need to take or tasks you should avoid post-treatment.

Want smooth skin in time for summer? Start your treatment now! At Radiance Medspa, we offer a personalized approach to permanent laser hair removal to ensure that each patient is 100 percent cared for at satisfied with results.

How to Treat Dry Skin

Let’s face it: winter isn’t the best time for your skin. Battling redness and scaly patches on your legs is one of those winter weather annoyances we can’t always avoid. But luckily, there are ways we can revitalize that healthy glow.

If you’re one of the many who suffers from dry skin around this time of year, you could benefit from a few of these simple remedies:

Aloe Vera. Aloe vera has many healing properties. For example, it contains acids that can fight off dead skin cells. So apply some gel to your skin for a quick home remedy.

Mild soap. Deodorant soaps may smell good, but they contain perfumes and irritants that can seriously dry out your skin. Instead, switch to a more mild soap and return to your perfume-based one when spring blooms again.

Lukewarm Water. Hot showers can cause dry skin. Not to mention, showering too often in itself can wash away your skin’s natural, protective oils. So make sure you shower sparingly, and when you do try to use lukewarm water.

Vitamins.
B-complex vitamin supplements contain thiamin, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid, which all help to support healthy skin. Other skin-healthy nutrients can be found in vitamins A, C, and E.

Chemical Peels. To best rejuvenate your skin, turn to the current technologies in skin care. Chemical peels are one of the safest treatments out there that help your skin to look and feel more radiant. To learn more about it, click here

Don’t let your skin suffer this winter! Turn to Radiance Medspa, for the most safe and effective skin care treatments in the industry! Dr. John V. Belmonte, Jr. is board certified with over 35 years of aesthetic experience. He works with Dr. Sonal Patel and an entire team of highly trained nurse injectors and aestheticians who are passionate about bringing you the most current treatment options.

Why Get Laser Hair Removal in Winter?

Getting tired of the daily shave? Shaving might not be the most difficult thing to do, but it sure can be time consuming. That’s why laser hair removal is the perfect solution. In fact, laser treatments receive the best results around this time of year! Why? We’ve got your answer here:

No sun exposure

Getting laser hair removal during the winter months means you don’t have to worry about excessive sun exposure the way you do during the summer. It is ideal to stay out of the sun before and after treatment to avoid darkening pigmentation of the skin. However, if you are exposed, don’t worry - Radiance Medspa has advanced technology that can bypass the skin and safely remove your hair regardless.

Be ready for swimsuit season
Each situation varies, but laser hair removal typically requires several treatments to completely remove air from the desired area. And because laser hair removal requires some time, starting in the winter ensures you will be ready by next summer.

If you’ve been wanting to rid your body of unwanted hair, now is the time to start preparing! At Radiance Medspa, we offer permanent hair removal using intense pulsed light (IPL) to disable the cells responsible for growing new hair. Say goodbye to painful waxing, tedious tweezing, and razor burn for good!

How to Reduce Facial Redness

Feeling cursed with facial redness? You’re not alone! Many of us suffer from skin conditions, like dermatitis, especially when the climate becomes more dry during the cooler months. But despite the cause of redness, there are a few simple cures to neutralize your skin’s pigmentation:

Facial masks. Although there is no scientific evidence to prove that facial masks can cure redness, many have turned to this home remedy for hundreds of years. Two of the most popular types are cucumber and oatmeal masks. If you choose the cucumber remedy, make sure the cucumbers are cool right out of the fridge. And if you decide oatmeal is better for your redness (especially for eczema), pour a few teaspoons of pure oatmeal into your hands and mix with water before applying to your skin.

Diet change. Making a few changes to your diet can have a significant impact on your skin. To get rid of your facial redness, stay away from spicy foods and drinks that are extremely hot. Instead, try fish oil supplements and probiotics. It also helps to eat more natural foods, such as apple, coconut, melon, spinach (and cucumber, of course).

Chemical peels. If home remedies aren’t doing the trick, it might be a smart idea to look into chemical peels. This type of treatment is designed to safely cure acne, sun damage, pigmentation, and other causes of facial redness. Chemical peels are one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures out there today. Why? Because they’re quick, painless, and most effective.

Are you looking to get rid of pesky redness? If so, chemical peels might be the answer for you! We have many different types of peels that can be used together or separately to correct skin pigmentation. At Radiance Medspa, we believe that everyone’s skin should be treated uniquely, which is why we offer a personalized skincare approach for all of our clients.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Do you find yourself searching for the latest creams and serums to erase those pesky fine wrinkles? We know how you feel - the process of aging isn’t an easy one. You want your youthful-looking skin back, but you’re not sure how to effectively do so. Luckily, wrinkles are a common part of aging and if you understand how they happen, you might be able to smooth them out:

To know what causes wrinkles, you must first understand the three layers of skin:

Layers of skin

Epidermis - The outer layer of skin that aids as protection from the outside environment. The epidermis has cells that move from the bottom layer to the top and build up a large amount of keratin, developing a tough outer shell.

Dermis - The second layer of the skin that contains the structural elements of the skin and connective tissue. There are several types of tissue that serve different purposes, such as collagen, which gives the skin its elasticity.

Subcutaneous Tissue - The bottom layer of skin, which contains fat cells and provides insulation to the body. This make the skin look more full.

Why skin wrinkles
Thinning skin - As you age, the epidermal cells in your skin become thin and less sticky, which causes your skin to lose moisture rather than keep it in. As a result, your skin becomes more dry. And because epidermal cells decrease with age, your skin is less able to repair itself as quickly, which causes wrinkles to stay.

Decreasing Collagen - Not only does the dermal layer thin as you age, but your body also starts to produces less collagen. This means that your skin loses its elasticity, which causes skin to wrinkle and sag.

Shrinking Fat Cells - When the fat cells get smaller as you mature, your wrinkles and sags can become more noticeable. This is because a fat cell cannot fill in for other layers of the skin to create a more full appearance.

Now that you know how the three layers of skin can affect wrinkles, you can take action to get rid of them if you wish to. At Radiance Medspa, we offer several skincare services, including micro-dermal needling and wrinkle fillers to help you achieve a more smooth appearance!

Top Anti-Aging Foods

Do you want to keep your skin looking radiant and beautiful? We’re right there with you! Radiant-looking skin is something everyone wishing they can hold onto. Although aging is a natural progression, there are a few steps you can take to slow down the process of aging skin.

The first step is making small changes to your diet. Below are a few foods to help you eat your way to healthy, glowing skin:

Water. Water is a good choice for many reasons. Not only does it benefit your internal organs, but it also helps boost the elasticity in your skin that causes wrinkling. So what’s the number one secret to anti-aging? H20, and lots of it!

Vitamin C. When production of collagen in your skin starts to slow, that’s when it’s time to start consuming more Vitamin C. Oranges are an obvious choice. Other foods include red pepper, broccoli, and grapefruit.

Anthocyanin. This is a compound that gives fruit that dark color. But more importantly it’s an antioxidant that neutralizes cell-damaging free radicals, such as UV rays. Eating a handful of blueberries as a snack or adding a cupful to your yogurt can help you restore damaged, aging skin.

Healthy fat. Foods like avocados contain a healthy fat known as monounsaturated fat, which helps your skin stay hydrated. It can also help you absorb some of those collagen-producing vitamins you consume. So switch up that high-fat salad dressing for some delicious avocado and a drop of lemon for a healthy kick!

Making a few dietary changes is one way to achieve more youthful-looking skin. Another solution is Ultherapy, a non-surgical procedure designed to lift, tighten, and contour your skin. At Radiance Medspa, we believe that everyone deserves a personalized approach to skincare, which is why we will work with you to find the best method.

Fall Into Fitness

Just because the leaves are changing colors, doesn’t mean you should give up on your workout routine. As a matter of fact, fall is the best season to head outside for exercise - the weather is crisp, the sun is still strong, and the foliage is breathtaking! There are many outdoor activities you can participate in this time of year include the following:

Hiking - Head out for a hike at a local park or a nearby nature trail. Not only is walking one of the most beneficial exercises, but it’s also a great way to simultaneously observe the color-changing leaves. So grab a light jacket, a pair of running shoes, and fall into fitness with this great cardiovascular activity.

Racing - Join a holiday race like the Scarecrow Scramble 5K or the Turkey Trot to get your blood pumping. This is a perfect way to enjoy the fresh fall air either solo or with a group. To learn about more races happening in the Naperville area, click here.

Biking - Bike riding is another type of workout to get you outdoors this season. The best part about biking is that it’s easy on your legs, ankles, and knees, and is easier than running. This means you can go a further distance and burn more calories!

While exercise is beneficial in many ways, it doesn’t always get rid of those deep tissue layers we also call cellulite. At Radiance Medspa, we want to help you look and feel your best, which is why we offer treatments to achieve a smooth appearance. To learn more about our Cellulite Reduction services, visit our website. And don’t forget to schedule your free consultation with us to receive $50 off your initial Radiance Treatment Package!

Why Your Skin Complexion Changes With Seasons

Now that fall has arrived, you probably notice a slight change in your complexion. That’s because it’s easy for your skin to change in accordance with the seasons. In other words, your skin has a way of telling you whether it’s hot, cold, humid, or dry. Here’s how:

Fall & Winter

Between the cool temperatures and blistering winds, it’s not uncommon to look a bit more pale and feel more dry during the cooler months. The primary reason you lose color in your skin is likely due to wind. Not only can cool wind take away your skin’s natural moisture, but it can also cause redness, dead skin cells, and clogged pores - the likely cause of acne during the fall and winter months. As a result of such dry conditions, we tend to apply extra amounts of facial moisturizer and body lotion to counteract the harsh wintry weather.

Spring & Summer

Warmer weather usually restores moisture, which improves your complexion and brings more color to your face. However, the most obvious reason that your complexion changes around this time of year is due to increased sun exposure. The more sun you’re exposed to, the more the pigment in your skin changes. But like anything else, there are a few drawbacks to summer weather as well. For instance, your acne could get worse as a result of increased sweat production and clogged pores. In addition, the heat and humidity that you experience more during warmer months can also cause bacterial and fungal infections, which could very likely change the you skin’s complexion.

Don’t let the cool weather leave your skin feeling dull! At Radiance Medspa, we offer a wide array of facial treatments and advanced combining technologies to help keep your skin looking radiant all season long!

What is an Ultrasonic Facial & What are the Benefits?

Want to look young again, but don’t want to deal with surgery? Don’t fret - at Radiance Medspa, we offer Ultrasonic Facials to help boost the production of your skin’s collagen. Here’s how it works:

The ultrasonic facial is one of our custom facials. It is non-invasive and customized to your personal skincare needs. This treatment allows us to get below the epidermal layer of the skin, promoting healthy cells to grow and stimulating collagen. We first use heat to penetrate skin and then use high speed vibrations to massage the tissue below the surface.

One of the major benefits of the ultrasonic facial is that it creates more elasticity of the skin, restoring that youthful appearance you were hoping to get back! It also helps your body and your skin in the following ways:

  • Reduces pores and bacteria, which is great for those who suffer from acne
  • Diminishes noticeable fine lines and wrinkles, and gives you an overall healthy glow
  • Improves the texture and tone of your skin
  • Removes toxins and waste from the body through vibrations in the lymph system

To learn more about what ultrasonic facials can do for you, click here.

If you’re tired of procedures that don’t work for your skin, then come see what Radiance Medspa has to offer! Our customized Ultrasonic Facials give you effective results through the use of advanced technology.

Why Do People Have Freckles?

Like many other facial features, freckles are unique. And while people develop these spots in various stages of their lives, they are often caused by similar factors. Below are a few reasons you or someone you know might develop freckles:

Genes. Comparable to other family traits, freckles are a common genetic trait carried down from parent to child due to shared skin types. So if your mother or father have noticeable freckles on their face, arms, or legs, chances are you will have them too.

Skin Tone & Hair Color. Typically, those with fair skin and red hair are likely to develop freckles at some point in their lives. But don’t be fooled - blondes and brunettes can have freckles too! Not to mention, people with light-colored eyes, like blue, green, or hazel are also more likely to carry this trait.

Sunlight. Ever notice how more defined spots show up after a day at the beach? Especially for those who have sensitive skin, being exposed to the sun can cause you to develop freckles (or sunspots) - even the faintest ones. That is why we, at Radiance Medspa, encourage you to cover up by reapplying sunscreen as often as every hour!

Do you have sunspots from prolonged sun exposure that you would like to banish? If so, consider photorejuvenation - a non-invasive treatment designed to remove sunspots and other imperfections with a Palomar RejuveLux™ photofacial.

See how Radiance Medspa can help you achieve radiant looking skin with photorejuvenation! We offer this treatment along with other combining technologies that can address all of your skincare concerns.

What You Need to Know About Stem Cells in Skin Care

Anti-aging ingredients in medicine, such as retinol, has changed the way many of us look in the mirror. But now medical researchers are studying an alternative way to reverse signs of aging: stem cells. In fact, there are several skincare brands that offer stem cells in hopes that they deliver the same results as other medicines. But before you buy one of these products, here’s what you need to know about stem cells.

1. Skin care contains either plant or human stem cells, which are derived from unfertilized eggs.

2. Plant and human cells operate similarly. In other words, plants and animals both function comparably to sustain growth and repair tissues (in the skin). In fact, stem cells unlike other cells are able to replicate themselves over a long periods of time.

3. Stem cells contain two major components: growth factors and proteins. Growth factors are involved in cell division, the development of new cells, and the production of collagen in your skin. Proteins, on the other hand, regulate stem-cell division. In essence, these two components help to firm wrinkles and slow the process of aging.

4. While evidence shows that human stem cells can thicken the skin, there is no evidence that proves plant stem cell growth factors work the same way. However, plant stem cells still have benefits, like fighting off free-radicals and boosting antioxidants in the body.

5. The amount of stem cells in the product you use does matter. So, don’t be deceived by labels - avoid spending money on products that say they are stem-cell derived when they’re not. Your best bet is to check the ingredients list on the back label to see how much active ingredients are in the product you are using. Keep in mind that stem cells should be first on the ingredient label.

What do you think about stem cell in skincare? Tell us on our Facebook page!

See how Radiance Medspa can help you look younger again by using growth factors to repair aging skin! We offer several facial treatments and combining technologies that can address all of your skincare concerns.

How Can I Get My Collagen Back?

Wrinkles and sagging skin are completely normal to experience as we age. This is because we lose the collagen in our skin that makes us look young. And even though aging is a natural phenomenon, that doesn’t make it easy for us to feel good about it. However, the good news is that there are things you can do to restore the collagen you’ve lost; check out a few of them below:

Vitamins - Vitamins C and D are especially helpful for your skin’s health if you consume the proper amount. It is recommended that you take 400mg of vitamin C per day and approximately 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day. If you keep up with your vitamins, you will probably notice a significant change in the appearance of your skin.

Exercise - Did you know that muscle development can stimulate the growth of collagen? This is a great reason to start that workout you’ve been meaning to do. Not to mention, working out can also prevent sagging tissue and poor bone density in your body. So, get started on developing stronger muscles today if you want to gain your collagen back!

Avoid “Collagen Killers” - Last but not least, another way you can restore your collagen is by avoiding situations that can ruin it. For example, steer clear of  long sun exposure, smoking, diabetes, poor eating habits, extreme stress and dehydration - all of these “collagen killers” are a sure way to make the process of aging happen far more rapidly.

How to Achieve a Flawless Face

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you question how you can get more collagen back and look young again? Believe it or not, achieving smooth skin takes just one step: Ultherapy.

What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a clinically proven procedure that helps to lift, tighten, and smoothen out the skin. The best part about this form of treatment is that it is non-invasive and has no downtime at all, which means you can visit Radiance Medspa during your lunch break and return without anyone knowing your little secret!

How does it work?
This method involves radio frequency and ultrasound, which tightens the existing collagen and naturally helps your body to produce more. Ultherapy works by safely heating the inner layers of your skin, which stimulates a natural and biological reaction. This reaction causes the old collagen to thicken and contract while stimulating new collagen. Allow approximately 4 to 12 months to notice maximum results, as your body does take some time to react. However, in the long run, the results are completely worth it!

Are you ready to get back to looking young again? It might sound impossible, but thanks to Ultherapy, achieving smoother and tighter skin is right at your fingertips!

To rejuvenate and tighten your skin, look no further than Radiance Medspa! We offer this treatment along with other combining technologies and can address all of your skincare concerns.
